Departure in 2 Days / Départ dans 2 jours

That’s been quite some years since I last updated this blog but it is time for an update. As you probably guessed from the title, a new trip to Japan will be starting soon. In just a little more than 48 hours but don’t expect updates before sunday as it is the day we’ll really start our visits. I hope you will enjoy this trip, back to some area I’ve already been, but that my wife don’t know, as well as some new places. See you soon!

A bientôt!

Back to France / De Retour en France

This is it, the trip is now completed and I’m already back in France without any plane trouble related to the ash clouds that is now present again over some parts of Europe including France. And like last year it is quite hard to come back, the way the people are is so different, and it just don’t feel the same way as in Japan, I really wished I could’ve stayed longer. Well right now I’ll be suffering of a bit of jet lag, went to sleep quite early, and was awaken at about 4/5am, which will need a bit of time to get over with it. Now the next step is that I’ll have to start Japanese lessons, it really became quite necessary if I want to go back and go into area that are not the main cities it is really required, as I would find very little English to help me. Anyway I really had a great trip, that it was very hard to leave everything behind, after those 10 great days I had over there. I hope you’ve enjoyed the blog stories and the pictures. And see you soon for other Japanese related articles, and probably the next trip at some point in the future.

Final Day / Dernier Jour

That’s it, it is finally the last day of this trip already, and sadly in the following 24 hours I should be in the plane bound for Paris, if everything goes well, as it seems that the volcanic ashes are giving some new troubles, though I’m not stressed by that, I’d rather have to manage to stay a little longer, than not having been able to make this trip.

So today I went out mainly for shopping, after planning everything for tomorrow which took me the morning, I had lunch before going to Nakano, where there is quite a big set of shops altogether around a very small place, as well as restaurants. Everything is covered so even in case of rain it is not a problem, though today weather was perfect. I could visit a few shop but it was really hard to find things I would have liked as of course it is written in Japanese, and not order alphabetically. But it was still nice. I managed to found the Soundtracks of Evangelion 2.0 and Code Geass, which joined to Best albums which I got at the Ghibli Museum.

After that I went for a tour in the Ikebukuro area, which is where my hotel was located last year with the organized tour, so I could see it a little, and get in the same way into various shops, and just get around the place. I did tried to find the West Gate Park with no success though.

After that the day was already ending, and I just planned on getting to sleep early to be in good shape for the lengthy trip of tomorrow. I’ll probably post a conclusion during Monday.

Day 9 / Jour 9

Today you’ll find much less picture, one reason to that is quite simple that there were not so much to see, as today has been a very poor day, very cloudy, and up to the Mount Fuji and all very rainy and windy.

As planned the group left Tokyo at about 9am, to make the trip to the base of Mount Fuji, which was our first stop after about an hour and half of motor coach. As we got closer and closer to Fuji-San, it became pretty clear that we would not be able to see it well, it was just the wrong day for this excursion. We still could get to the fifth station, which is at about 2300m of altitude a good two third of the total height of Mount Fuji. There it had become very cold with the height and much more windy, there was even still a bit of snow here and there. We could still go for a tour of the souvenirs shops, as well as of a small temple built next to it. By luck I could get a small glimpse through the clouds.

We then came back to the restaurant for a Japanese lunch, and when we leaved we could see much more of it and made a quick stop for some pictures, the top stayed in the fog, but the bottom became much more visible, and you could just get the idea of the complete size and shape, well last year I had only the top with sun, this time the bottom with rain, I guess it just means I’ll have to comeback to see it complete.

For the rest of the trip the weather was as much as an issue, we could take the aerial car as planned that would take us to the volcanic active area with the Kuro Tamago, that I went to last year, but the weather being poor we could not see so much of Hakone Park, and it was quite funny at some point going through the clouds and seeing just the two cables on both side of the cabin without anything to keep them in the air. On the top I took part of a quick round trip to the real top where we had those famous black eggs, that are said to give seven more years to live, and it was quite a reward as we all got completely soaked by the trip, with the wind and persistent rain.

The next stop was Lake Ashi, and a cruise on the lake, that had the same fate as the aerial lake as being high with low clouds visibility was very low, but it still was a nice ride, talking with the other persons of the group. It was then time to get to the Odawara station where we took the Shinkansen back for Tokyo, and that eventually made a stop at Shinagawa where is my hotel so I had nothing to do than get off it to be at my final destination.

Tomorrow is already the last day, that arrived much too quick, I might not do a lot tomorrow, I’ll be planning my way back on Sunday to the airport, getting the N’Ex tickets, and things like that in the morning. And I’ll probably get out for some shopping in the afternoon, to get myself a few things and maybe a few presents before being back at the hotel for one final good night of sleep before the 11hours lengthy trip back to Paris. And then I’ll of course make some kind of conclusion once I’ll be back in France.

Today visit of Nikko with an organized tour, departure was at 9am in Tokyo and took the group to the area of Nikko where everything would take place about 150km to the North, in the middle of the mountain.

We first stopped at the Toshogu Shrine, that is the place where the Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu had asked to be buried, and a little shrine to be built on the place. Although his grand son a few years later, being very proud of his grand father (bringing back peace to Japan) decided to make it a much bigger shrine that had a very high cost at the time of about 45 millions of Yens. In this place we could freely visit the various small temples and places around the the Shrine and get to the tomb itself. One of the place of interest had a dragon on it’s ceilling, what was amazing more than the picture itself is the sound that one monk was making with two batons together, under the tail there sure was sound, but once under the dragon head, the sound became completely different, which was very surprising.

After this first visit we went to the restautant for lunch with a Japanese set of tempura and noodles, which was very nice as it was already late, or early in the afternoon. After this pause we went for two short sight seeing sequences, the first being on the shore of the Chuzenji lake at about 1700m of altitude. Then a few minutes from the lake we could see the Keigon’s fall from a little distance. The falls are very nice and they fall for about 90 meters. We had then a little time to check the souvenirs shop including one of poterie, one specialty of the Tochigi prefecture, before making the long trip back to Tokyo. One point to get to this height is that there are two roads, one to get up with 20 hairpin curves, and one to get down which have 28 hairpin curves, so to make the trip both ways a total of 48 curves to cross with the bus, which was quite impressive on the views we could get.

Day 4 to 7 / Jour 4 à 7

As planned I joined my friend today, so we went from Tokyo to Yokohama by train, and then to her house which took us a around an hour. There I met with her mother too, and we had lunch.

We went bicycling in the neighborhood, where we visited a temple of which we went completely around and got in the heights that have given some nice views of Yokohama and the sea not so far away. We then simply continued to the sea front where there were a lot of people getting crams, and also just being there for the beach. And right next to it is a set of attractions, with some tower that let you free-fall, and some various attractions, like water boat, and dolphin shows and the things like that.

Then we went back and got to a nearby shopping mall for lunch, with sushi being put on rolling thing that turns around the restaurant and that you can just pick all you want with the plates being representative of the price by there colors or symbols. And that’s it for this small day.

The next day was the planned visit to the Ghibli Museum, which took a bit less than two hours to make the train trip to Mikata. The museum is in the center of a big park, and really a place with a lot of room for imagination, of course there were the Ghibli movies, but also much more, there were some explanations on how everything is made and how it is working in a movie theater, as well as a lot of books that have served as raw materials for their creations, and many many amazing color or hand-drawn sketches that really gave and idea of the work done. The museum also features a catbus area for children, a nice very crowded shop as well as some real size robot and cube from Castle in the Sky (Tenku no Shiro no Laputa).

Following this small trip, the day after we went to too important areas of Yokohama that are Chinatown, which is a real kind of city in the city, where suddenly it’s not Japan anymore but China, with a lot of shops, a nice temple, and many many restaurants as well as a very important number of people that were in the main street. We then continue down to the Yokohama Bay and the Minato Mirai 21, a nice place near the ocean, with some nice views on Yokohama and the sea beyond.

For the final day it was more relaxed, as after all I had moved quite a lot and we had seen a lot of things so we went for a simple movie, and had a nice resting day.

Day 3 / Jour 3

After two days of being alone on myself or almost, today was an organized tour inside of Tokyo, which give me the opportunity to see some new things, as well as see again some other I had seen, and also to meet a few french speaking people for a little change.

The first step of today’s trip was the Tokyo Tower, which was actually designed in the very beginning as a TV transmission tower, but has also two observatory, one at about 150m and the other, much higher, but we stayed at the middle one, getting to the higher one required special tickets, and also to wait for about an hour when we were here. It was an occasion to take some other shots of Tokyo from the top.

After that we went to the Happo-en garden, where we had a tea ceremony, we then had a little time to walk in the garden itself, and we saw several couple getting married which is not surprising, our guide told us it was the second day of the year that is the most used for weddings.

We continued to the Chinzan-so, where we once again went through quite a big garden with other couples, which I guess had just married that were there too. And we then ate at the Mokushundo restaurant where food was grilled just in front of us by the waitresses, that had put on us some nice apron. It was very good and I had a great time.

After lunch we went straight to the Imperial Palace, where we went up to the main gate, which people can go through only twice a year to see the Emperor. The place is really huge and without any cars, once again like a strange place inside Tokyo where suddenly everything around seems distant, like being a little in another world.

Then we went to the Hinode Pier where we take a boat for a forty minutes cruise on the Sumida river that would take us up to Ginza, there I’ve found myself like last year in front of the Temple, so I took a Mikuji, but this time it was not very good so I quickly attached it to the pole to get it canceled. After all of that it was already the end of the day, but as it was early and that the guide offered to drop those who would like in Ginza I took the chance to see a little more before going back to the Hotel.

Ginza is a bit like the Champs-Elysee of Paris, with a big avenue, which is bordered by a very high number of shops for many famous brands, Chanel, Dior, Apple, and so on. But what made it a little different too is that on Saturdays and Sundays the avenue is closed to vehicles so instead of being everyone on each side of the street you were able to walk just anywhere you want, so it did not seemed so crowded in fact. And I had the luck to find one of the gift I wanted here so it was nice.

Went I came back I took a walk at the same time through the Hotels garden which I’ve under my window and that are pretty nice. So that is it for today, tomorrow I’ll join my friend, so I’ll probably have less to post, and don’t know if I’ll take the time or not to do it, I can’t be a bad guest 😉 so in the worst case you should see no more posts until Wednesday.

Day 2 / Jour 2

Today I continued as I had started yesterday to go and discover new areas of Tokyo, yesterday I went to the east side, so today I chose to go the opposite way and went first to Shinjuku, and then to Shibuya.

Shinjuku is really quite a different kind of area that you can almost split in two, I came first by the west exit, and there it was probably much more like USA with many many sky crappers, that have popped up about everywhere, that is really crowded and one of the biggest station in Tokyo. But nevertheless after a little walk I still have found a little park on this side, and well even without the park once again there are trees and nature a little everywhere, so that it still not so gray everywhere. Then I went to the eastern side, and found myself eating in a small Izakaya of Shinjuku which was quite nice and hopefully had English menu, and even pictures of the plates so I could chose very easily. I then continue my walk toward the east and got to my destination which is the Shinjuku Gyoen National Park, which is a little like in Ueno but much bigger. This park took me about one hour or more I would say to go around it, and even has a french garden. It was really nice and lot of people where here to relax and also a lot of scholars who seemed to had a drawing to do, which I must say were really well made, much better than what I’ve ever been able to do. Japanese are much more into the Art than me I guess.

After this long walk I then got a little to the south to find another big area which is Shibuya, a place that is much more attractive to the young, with the 109 being there fashion place. But first I chose to go through the Hachiko exit. Hachiko is the statue of a dog named Hachi, the ko being an affective particle and was raised after this nice story, which is that the dog was coming to the station everyday with it’s master in the morning, and was coming back to get him at the end of the day, but one day the teacher did not came home, and had died at his workplace, still day after day the dog continued to come at the station, until someday he eventually himself died. That’s in memory of this story of fidelity that the statue was raised, though the original one was melted during the war for metal, it was after that recreated and is a famous meeting point in Shibuya.

So there I went and saw a lot of buildings with less trees though, and also a lot of shops and very small streets with many many kind of places, from the very small shop to the big department store that use many floors. But the most important was that I came here to join my friend who had managed to got us tickets so I could attend Kokia’s concert. And that was a really nice concert that she performed, and with a much better group of musician than during her European tours, as added to the usual Guitar and Piano players that come with her every year, there were a set of string with the Cello, a Violin and a String Bass, as well as a percussionist. A great concert, after which we came to eat in a Chinese restaurant which changed me a little, and I was relieved not having to find something by myself. After that and the time to get back to Shinagawa it was already time to part for today.

Day 1 / Jour 1

So here comes the first day, after an uneventful flight yesterday, and a night of rest, well not exactly a night as I was not so tired when I arrived at the hotel which was about 9pm. So today, I’ve started after checking my maps and all to walk in the area of the hotel which is in Shinagawa. And is with a lot of surprises that like in other area of Tokyo, if you just get a little outside of the main street and all, you easily get into very small roads, and in nature where you do not seem so much to be in such a major city. After that I went back to the station for one of the hardest thing for a non Japanese I think which is to find a restaurant for lunch, as there are two things which are first to find them as sometimes they are underground, or on top floors and names are only in Japanese, and then to find one where you have English menu, or at least someone who can help you. So I find one by the station and had a little curry of fish which was pretty nice.

I then took the train for Akihabara, and there I’ve discovered how much better it is organized than in Paris, of course there are much more people, and well it appeared someone was sleeping very hard or having some troubles I don’t really now, but well people got worried, told the driver and then she had made an announcement which I guess was to say we would not leave before a few minutes, and just after less than five minutes three or four agents of the train station came and awoke her up and helped her before we could then continue. One thing we’ll not be seeing anywhere else where you just have no more agents. That was also on the trip to get to the hotel, that I could get my first taste of the Japanese kindness, I was standing on the small trip on the Yamanote yesterday evening, because I wanted not to bother people with my suitcase. And then a middle aged man told me I could sit and engage conversation which was really nice asking where I was going and telling me how much station there were still to go, and so we discussed a bit in English of course, but that was really nice.

So back to the Electric town, which was really crowded with hundreds of small and big shops, many using several levels, and where you get to find a lot of things, with a good part being electronics (TV, Hi-Fi, Games, …) and Manga/Anime. You also get to see a lot of dressed girls giving some ads for some maid coffee, which are coffees where those maid take care of you, naming you like goshujin sama (which is just master in Japanese), as well as advertisement for shops. It is really a lot of things to see and hear, and still a nice time that I could take more time there, though I didn’t try to find one of those maid coffee, I would’ve had a hard time talking there I think.

Then as I still had time before my program of the evening I decided I would go to visit Ueno which is an Area we didn’t went at all last year and which is also quite nice as there is very big park that is once again another part of Tokyo, where you’re just not so much more in that big cities you see buildings in the horizon but they do not seem so close anymore. At this place there is also a few lakes one being natural, and another being used for boat location where you can find and go doing pedalo, or just real boat, there were a lot of people taking good time, and a lot of couples that where there having picnic, or just relaxing. I also saw a small temple with a lot of food stands in front of it, some cherry trees, and got a glimpse of some scholars playing the most known sports here which is baseball.

After that it was time to get to Hamamatsucho for a first organized night tour of Tokyo. We started by dining at Odaiba on the 21st floor of an hotel, where I had beef-sukiyaki, then we went on the shore side of Odaiba to see the Statue of Liberty, before going back through the Rainbow Bridge to get a view of Tokyo from the high level as we went on the 52nd floor of the Mori Tower, that was a nice time to get a night view of Tokyo. That’s it for now, see you tomorrow.
